Invoice like it’s 2025. But what does that actually mean?

As we neither do have a crystal ball, here are our predictions for the e-invoicing trends for the year ahead. Dive right in!

The e-invoicing mandates are here. Period.

Various countries are implementing or extending mandatory e-invoicing regulations, especially for B2B and B2G transactions. For example, in Belgium, legislation has been set to make B2B electronic invoicing mandatory by January 2026 whereas in Germany all companies are required to be able to receive e-invoices from the beginning of 2025 moving towards stricter mandates by 2028.

Keep an eye on the regulations and timelines for e-invoicing in the countries where you and your customers operate. To expand your business globally, consider partnering with an e-invoicing provider that supports compliance with local regulations through one solution.

Standardisation and interoperability with Peppol

There’s a noticeable trend toward the adoption of global and regional standards, such as Peppol in many countries. These standards are designed to improve the interoperability of e-invoicing systems, making cross-border transactions smoother.

It’s definitely not too late to get on the Peppol train – start by discovering the benefits of using Peppol.

Real-time reporting demands

Some tax authorities, particularly in Europe and Latin America, are starting to require businesses to report invoice data in real-time or near real-time. Financial reporting and e-invoicing go hand in hand, complementing each other to streamline financial processes.

In Europe, the ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) initiative is driving the digital transformation of VAT reporting – Read more how ViDA impacts your business as a software provider.

E-invoicing as an integrated part of broader systems

E-invoicing is increasingly integrated into broader business processes and systems, such as ERP, supply chain management, and accounts payable/receivable. This integration streamlines operations and enhances efficiency.

Maventa’s API offers one integration working as an intuitive extension to your product. Read more about our e-invoicing solution.

Automation and AI

E-invoicing isn’t safe from the AI revolution. Nor should it be.

Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate invoice processing is a growing trend. Automation reduces manual errors, speeds up processing times, and can enhance compliance by automatically checking the invoice data against regulators.

At Maventa, AI technology is increasingly used for purposes such as fraud detection and experimentation with AI-based solutions in invoicing flows. Moreover, for software vendors, e-invoicing facilitates access to higher-quality data which in turn enables the development of AI-based solutions.

Enhanced emphasis on security

Security remains at the core of e-invoicing. We see blockchain technology being explored more and more as a way to enhance security, transparency, and trust in e-invoicing processes.

Maventa’s Detect service goes a step further, performing automatic checks on purchase invoices and their senders, helping you mitigate risks such as fraudulent invoices ending up in payment.

Environmental considerations

E-invoicing comes with many benefits, and we see companies increasingly adopting e-invoicing not only to achieve cost savings and efficiency, but also to reduce their environmental impact by minimising paper use.

For example, switching from paper invoices to e-invoices reduces your average CO2 emissions by invoice by nearly 70%.

SME adoption

This year, we believe smaller businesses increasingly adopt e-invoicing as the solutions become more affordable and user-friendly. Governments and service providers – such Maventa – continue making e-invoicing accessible to businesses of all sizes.

And that’s a commitment we’re proud to be part of!

And that’d be our predictions. Get in touch to let us help you transform the way your business operates through e-invoicing.
